I. CDBG Recommendations

CDBG Recommendations: Burlington's Citizen Advisory Board, recognized
by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development as a national
practice, has reviewed the 42 applications received this year for
Community Development Block funding and has made its funding
recommendations. You can view the recommendations at CEDO's website,
www.cedoburlington.org. The Neighborhood Grants Board has also
completed its review of proposals from the Neighborhood Planning
Assemblies, which you can also view at the CEDO website.

Both sets of recommendations have been incorporated in the City's
annual Action Plan, which you can view at www.cedoburlington.org.

There will be a Public Hearing held before City Council on Monday,
April 18, to hear comments on the recommendations, on the Action Plan,
and on housing and community development needs.

III. Welcome Baby Party

The Burlington Welcome Baby Program will be partnering with the
Fletcher Free Library to host a book dedication event for any family who
has had a baby in the past year. Food and musical entertainment will be
provided, and families will be encouraged to choose a picture book to
personally dedicate to their new child. This celebration will be taking
place Monday May 3rd from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Fletcher Free
Library.

IV. Burlington VT Freecycle

The Freecycle Network is made up of many individual groups across the
globe. This branch is based in the Burlington, Vermont area. Freecycle
is a grassroots movement of people who are giving & getting stuff for
free in their own towns. Each group is run by a local volunteer
moderator. Membership is free. Everything posted must be free. Whether
it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door to be given away, it
can be posted on the network. Or if you're looking to acquire something
yourself respond to the posting directly and you just might get it.
After that it is up to the giver to set up a pickup time for passing on
the treasure.

For more information on Freecycle or to find other local groups across
the country, visit www.freecycle.org

V. New Anti-Poverty Program

NeighborKeepers, a long-term strategy to move families out of poverty
through mentoring and coaching, is inviting you to an important

***The giraffe weevil is a type of beetle and is one of the strangest
insects that I've ever seen! It's scientific name is Trachelophorus
giraffa, and its pretty obvious why it's named after giraffes. It lives
on the island of Madagascar, located near the eastern coast of Africa. A
giraffe weevil grows up to 3 inches, or 80mm long, and is probably the
longest of all weevils. Most of its length is made up by the long snout.
Most other weevils average less than a fourth of an inch long. Giraffe
weevils have wings beneath the red wing cases.

Weevils are often called "snout beetles" or "elephant beetles", and
giraffe weevils sure have earned their nicknames. There are over 50,000
species of weevils in the world! Weevils are not only the largest family
of beetles, but also the largest family in the entire animal kingdom!
These herbivores, or plant eaters, use their snouts to bore into plant
tissue, seeds and leaves. Giraffe weevils, and other weevils, live in
warm climates. The eggs are commonly laid in holes chewed by the female
in wood of trees. Larvae that hatch from these eggs tunnel in the wood,
feeding and growing until they are ready to change into adults. ***
